Costume Close-up Jacket in Blue Chintz,
1775-1785
Colonial Williamsburg, May 2012
Finishing the look...continued...: When I wore
this jacket for the first time during Grand Illumination weekend, I paired it with a blue/ivory changeable silk taffeta petticoat and a coordinating
black and blue muff and matching hat. To make it more suitable for springtime wear for our most recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg, I switched things up a bit by wearing an ivory silk taffeta petticoat instead. The black and blue hat was exchanged for one covered in striped ivory silk gauze and embellished with lavender silk satin ribbons. To add a little splash of color, I also swapped the pearl necklace for a coral one. Those few little changes completely altered the mood of the outfit from the cold, crisp blues of winter to cheery, soft springtime pastels. I can't make up my mind which ensemble I like better!

I just adore this jacket and the different outfits you have made from it. You look SO perfect!
ReplyDeleteLOL You're right! We have the exact same pose! Wouldn't it have been something if I had been wearing my blue chintz jacket that day!

I've been quietly enjoying the blog for over a year, but I just had to comment on this outfit! I really, REALLY love it! Your skirt shape in particular- what are you wearing under it? Does the silk just have a nice body to it as well?
ReplyDeleteYes, I do love this one! ;-)
Lauren, thank you! I'm loving the multiple-outfit swapping, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteLaurie, I didn't include the picture we took in EXACTLY the same pose on EXACTLY the same bench in this post, but I'll send it to you because it's just too too funny that we managed that! Yes, wouldn't it have been hilarious to have both been wearing the jackets that day, too?! :-)
Hi Lily! Thank you! :-) The petticoat is worn over two linen petticoats (my usual underpetticoat and then an ivory linen one over that to obscure the stripes of the underpetticoat!) and a bum roll. They collectively give nice poof, but you're right about the quality of the fabric as well. It's a pretty firmly-woven medium-weight silk taffeta that has incredible body. When I first got it and made up the petticoat, Ashley and I laughed at it because it was so stiff it could literally stand by itself and I didn't think I could use it because it poked out everywhere and wouldn't hang properly at all. Pretty hilarious, really! After wearing it a couple of times, it's calmed itself down a bit, though, and now that body is ideal for wearing with jackets to achieve that extra bit of petticoat shaping.
By the way, both Ashley and I are thoroughly enjoying your Titanic Ball blog! It looks like you all had so much fun dancing, and you all looked STUNNING. *sigh*
